On Passion for Life
This toast was the favorite of my close friend Royal Foote. He used it at all family and social events, reminding us to make the most of this precious gift of life.
Come, Fill the Cup
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Come, fill the Cup, and in the Fire of Spring
Your Winter Garment of Repentance fling:
The Bird of Time has but a little way
To fly — and the Bird is on the Wing.
On Fearlessness
When I first read these Shakespeare lines I thought they meant, “Don’t fear death.” Later I realized they meant, “Don’t fear life.”
Of all the Wonders
Shakespeare, Julius Caesar (Act II, Scene 2)
Of all the wonders that I have heard,
It seems to me most strange that men should fear,
Seeing that death, a necessary end,
Will come when it will come.
